Heritage
“Your branches can only reach high if your roots grow deep.” -Unknown
Born on a petite island, cradled by the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, it’s a place of immense beauty and a cherished spirit. An island that remains shrouded in relative anonymity, bearing the name Puerto Rico. On the world map, Puerto Rico marks its presence at 18.22° N and 66.59° W. Its dimensions stretch roughly 35 miles from north to south and 100 miles from west to east. While the landmass may seem modest, its essence is rich with character and enchanting locales. I've spent my entire life here, and yet, I'm convinced I've barely scratched the surface of its awe-inspiring landscapes.
The island's history is a tapestry woven with change, growth, and an array of influences. Our culture emerges from the tapestry of Spaniards, Taino Indians, and Africans. As a result, our cultural mosaic is a symphony of diversity. The original inhabitants, the Taino Indians, referred to the island as Borikén. The passage of time witnessed the arrival of Spanish colonizers in 1493, who brought with them Africans to toil as slaves. The island was initially christened San Juan, but the name was later replaced with Puerto Rico. “Puerto” meaning port and “Rico” meaning rich, an acknowledgment of its abundance and potential for trade and commerce. For a substantial period, the island remained under Spanish colonial rule. However, in 1899, it shifted hands to become a colony of the United States of America. This transition signified the birth of a culture that is a blend of multiracial identities.
An intriguing fact about Puerto Ricans is that genetic studies have identified us as the closest human match to a “perfect human”—at least, that’s how some describe it. Given the amalgamation of races within our culture, our physical appearances can be remarkably diverse. For instance, my hair boasts a 3b curl pattern, distinctly curly, whereas my parents sport straight hair. My eyes and hair are shades of brown, yet one of my cousins has piercing blue eyes and dark blonde hair. My skin carries a pale hue, whereas another cousin showcases a rich light brown complexion. It might seem perplexing to imagine the divergence among family members.
But for us, this diversity is the norm; it’s merely a variation in appearances. Deep within, we share common traits—big-heartedness, passion, and an indomitable spirit, rooted in strong values and brimming with aspirations. We are a resilient bunch, refusing to settle even in the face of adversity. This strength might, in part, emanate from our intricate history. It’s a conviction of mine that our unique blend of cultural legacies has forged the individuals we are today.
As for myself, I wear my heritage with pride. A young woman who embodies intelligence, diligence, joy, and spontaneity. I know my future holds success, and my family tree will flourish, proudly showcasing the branches that have grown over the years. In due course, my tree will cast a shadow that others will look up to. I am confident that, without the rich tapestry of my heritage, I would not be the woman I am today. I believe countless Puerto Ricans feel the same way—our heritage is an integral part of our identity, shaping us into who we are.
