Daring to fly

"Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all." - Unknown

One of my earliest memories, vivid as if it happened yesterday, takes me back to the time when I was just a three-year-old, embarking on a trip with my parents and twin sister. Perhaps that early exposure explains my unwavering passion for traveling. As the years unfolded, so did my fascination with exploration. In 2019, my sister and I took our first independent flight—an exhilarating experience that marked the beginning of a new chapter in our wanderlust-filled lives. Stepping onto that plane was not just a flight; it was a stepping stone to independence. While the prospect of being away from our parents for over a week was daunting, having my sister by my side made it manageable. Throughout our lives, we'd been inseparable, sharing classes and friends, making this journey an exciting test of our bond.

The desire to craft my own tales of adventure had been simmering within me for years. This aspiration came to fruition in August 2021—a pivotal month that saw me embarking on a solo expedition to multiple destinations. However, my tendency to overthink nearly undermined the thrill. Parting ways with my sister for ten days felt bittersweet. After all, we'd shared our lives from the womb onward, making this new endeavor both exciting and nerve-wracking.

Launching from my homeland, the journey began on a relatively smooth note, except for a minor setback: a flight delay due to weather conditions. Spending nearly four hours at the airport wasn't part of the plan, but the anticipation overshadowed any inconvenience. The first stop on my itinerary was Lauderdale by the Sea (LBTS), a quaint town a short drive from Fort Lauderdale. LBTS' beauty was captivating, but what left an indelible mark was my visit to a charming bar. Requesting a unique concoction from the barista resulted in a delightful pink drink—a reminiscent blend of watermelon jolly ranchers. I couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of returning just for that enchanting drink. A mere two days later, it was time to bid farewell to LBTS and venture forth.

The next leg of the journey encountered turbulence, albeit of a different kind. A flight delay of an hour translated to a tight one hour and thirty-minute window before departure. To complicate matters, my dad's cousin, who was dropping me off, found themselves navigating a labyrinthine parking lot. The ticket, it seemed, had vanished into the ticket machine abyss, necessitating our resourcefulness to exit without it. This unexpected hurdle saw us navigating the lot for 35 minutes, finally emerging at the departure section with precious minutes to spare. However, fate had other plans. At the check-in counter, a terse statement greeted me, "That flight is already boarding." My phone's discrepancy in boarding times was met with disbelief. Rushing through TSA checks ensued—a blur of shoe removal and bag inspection. Alas, despite my efforts, I arrived at the gate only to discover a gate change that required traversing disparate wings of the airport. In a desperate sprint, with shoes in hand, I begged destiny to let me catch that plane. By a stroke of luck, the plane hadn't yet taken flight, and I managed to board, albeit breathless and slightly disheveled.

Charleston, SC, awaited as my next destination—an enchanting week filled with discoveries. The novelty of spotting dolphins, a thrilling escape room experience, and a succession of delightful memories formed the cornerstone of this journey. The transition to Raleigh, NC—a leisurely four-hour road trip—allowed for engaging conversations, particularly a discussion on names, with my cousin and his spouse. In Raleigh, reuniting with my grandmother and cousins brought immeasurable joy. Despite the brevity of the visit, the camaraderie was a heartwarming reminder of the value of family bonds.

As a Sunday dawned, I embarked on the homeward journey, overwhelmed by gratitude. Reflecting on the experiences, the bonds forged, and the newfound confidence, I felt a deep sense of pride. This journey was more than a geographical exploration; it was an odyssey of personal growth. It was a testament to my audacity in leaving the familiar behind, spreading my wings, and soaring beyond the confines of my comfort zone. So, the next time fear lingers as you contemplate taking flight—whether literal or metaphorical—remember that your wings will never be fully ready unless you embrace the leap.
